Nonprofit Partnership Program in Fairfield and Suisun City

2010 NPP Grant Recipients

A $5,000 grant was issued to 2B Successful Youth's STEMulate Program, an after school program with hands-on, inquiry-based learning provided in a positive youth development context. This program will help students improve their STEMulate (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) knowledge, skills, and abilities. The project follows the vision of the National Science Education Standards and engages the following principles:

1. Science is for all youth,

2. Learning science is an active process, and

3. Science reflects the intellectual and cultural traditions that characterizes the practice of contemporary science.

A second grant of $2,500 was made to CAP Solano's Suisun City After School Program. This pilot program challenges Suisun City youth to success in an after school program, designed by students and supported by community based volunteers. Its purpose is to engage at-risk youth in a valuable and meaningful after school program with activities that help the youth to make better choices in their lives.

The Nonprofit Partnership Program, established on April 1, 2009, was created to strengthen, develop, and serve the nonprofit organizations in Solano County to help them help their clients.

One way NPP demonstrates its commitment to the community is by acting as a convener of forums to gather and disperse information from the diverse voices that comprise our cities.

2010 NPP focus Fairfield and Suisun City.

To help assess the needs of Fairfield and Suisun City, SCF conducted a short survey to collect information about various topics like health, education, basic needs and public safety. Information from this survey was used by Solano Community Foundation to ascertain the greatest needs in Fairfield and Suisun City.

Responses from this survey can be found by clicking here.

Following the survey, SCF convened a forum of NPP members to review and discuss the top issues as identified through the survey. In response to Education as the top issue, the participants were asked to identify the top needs addressing education. These needs include:

1. Providing and promoting mentoring for children and youth,

2. Offering life skills/college-career training to youth, and

3. Working with local businesses to hire and train high school students.
