High school is the time when students take their first steps toward figuring but what career path they’d like to take and how they plan to get there.

Lisa Leone hopes to make the process easier for her business students at Vanden High School by signing them up for Kuder Navigator, an online career planning program that allows students to create career portfolios.

“The account lasts them for life,” Leone said. “They can put their resume on there and there are assessments to help them find the careers they want and a video library with advice.”

Thanks to a $500 Education Plus! Minigrant, Leone recently began incorporating the program into her classroom.

“The main thing is that they have a place to keep all their information and they can access it from anywhere,” Leone said, adding she plans to use the career assessments in class from the Web site, http://www.kudernavigator.com.

Leone was one of 59 teachers to receive a minigrant from the Solano Community Foundation out of 99
applicants.

The grants ranged from $70 to $500 and were awarded to Solano County public school teachers for innovative learning projects, according to a Solano Community Foundation press release.

“More than ever, teachers need financial assistance to provide their students a varied and enriching learning experience,” said Stephanie Wolf, president and CEO of Solano Community Foundation, in the release. "Teachers come up with creative ideas each year and find ways to get their students involved with projects that directly support what they’re learning in the classroom.”

Projects ranged from a family science night at Dan O. Root Elementary School to purchasing books for the
first grade Accelerated Reader program at Center Elementary School. The 10 Travis School District teachers who won grants were congratulated at a recent Travis School Board meeting.

Vacaville School District had four winners and Fairfield-Suisun School District had 22.

A “Teacher Recognition Event” is planned for all of the recipients at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fairfield
Community Center, 1000 Kentucky St. More information, including a complete list of winners, is available online at http://www.solanocf.org or by calling 399-3846.
