After all the donations were totaled and the bills paid, just short of $50,000 has been set aside for Vallejo's libraries, seniors and youth.
The Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament in October yielded the lion's share of the two-part community fundraiser last year, initiated by Mayor Osby Davis. The following month, the Mayor's Image Award recognizing Vallejo native and New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, brought in about $10,000 before expenses, Davis said.
"I dream big -- I was hoping for $200,000. But we have something to shoot for," Davis said.
"I'm happy with the $50,000. It actually allows us to put the money back into the agencies we're not able to fund because of our budget crisis. I'm also excited to expand our after-school program at a time that we really need it."
Davis said he hopes to distribute the $48,994 to the Solano County Library, Florence Douglas Senior Center and after-school programs in partnership with the Greater Vallejo Recreation District later this month.
Davis said the fundraising efforts, which he has already begun planning for next year, would not have been possible without the assistance of Vallejo Outreach. It fronted the initial costs of the two events and was repaid via the Solano Community Foundation, which handled donations.
Community philanthropist and businessman Buck Kamphausen also provided his downtown U.S.A. World Classic Events Center for the awards dinner.
Davis also recognized the efforts of event organizers Phil Elstrom, Carol Larson, Gary Salvadori, Geri Spearman, Betty Walker, Terrye Davis, LaGuan Lea, Dennis Klimisch, Pete Friesen, Sissy Schmidt and Peter Wilson.
